BSB: Victory for Glenn Irwin Donington at as Tommy Bridewell extends BSB championship lead
Glenn Irwin won the second British Superbike race of the weekend at Donington on Sunday as Tommy Bridewell’s second place finish extended his lead at the top of the championship over OMG Yamaha rider Kyle Ryde to five points.
In what was a thrilling 12-lap race, PBM Ducati’s Irwin started third on the grid but seized the lead from his former Honda Racing team-mate Bridewell at the halfway point.
At one stage the rider from Northern Ireland extended his advantage to half a second but Ryde made his move on the penultimate lap.
Irwin would, however, come straight back to regain the lead and fended off both his championship rivals to take the chequered flag by 0.241 seconds from Bridewell with Ryde in third.
Reigning champion Bridewell now sits on 378 points overall, with Ryde on 373 and Irwin on 334 ahead of Sunday’s second feature event of the weekend.
The final round of races will then be staged at Brands Hatch on the weekend of 12-13 October.
