Caleb Williams profile: Who is Chicago Bears’ new quarterback set to make NFL debut?
The number one overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft makes his eagerly-awaited debut on Sunday, with the Chicago Bears desperately hoping Caleb Williams can finally be the franchise quarterback they’ve always craved.
Chicago fans have been at fever pitch ever since Williams’ name was called at the draft, as not only are they starved of recent success but in their long 104-year history the team has never really had a superstar at the most important position in the sport.
Highlighting that is the fact the team is the only one in the league never to have had a quarterback pass for 4,000 yards or 30 touchdowns in a season.
Williams could be the man to change all that.
Only three quarterbacks drafted number one overall have ever won in week one of their rookie season, while the last 15 have failed to win their first NFL start since David Carr did so in 2002.
But few of those QBs have joined a team as well set-up as the Bears, who have gone all-in to build a side geared up for Williams to win right away.
And during training camp and pre-season, he’s impressed his team-mates enough to suggest he could just be the saviour of the franchise.
“He’s ready for it. He’s up for the task. His confidence is good,” said new signing, veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen.
“He’s gotten better ever since we started. The confidence is through the roof.”
